Armed man barricaded himself in Norton home, fired at police

Police say a SWAT team was called to a Norton home Thursday night after an armed man barricaded himself inside as a woman and young child fled from the house.

No one was injured and the man eventually surrendered.

Heath Mullett, 42, had a handgun and was “irrational” when he barricaded himself inside his home at 9:30 p.m. after he was involved in an argument with a woman in the home, according to Norton police. Mullett told a Norton dispatcher that he had more than 500 rounds of ammunition, police said.

Several rounds of ammunition were fired at police from inside the home, police said, and one round struck a police vehicle. Officers did not return fire, police said.

Mullet finally surrendered to negotiators and exited the home with the assistance of the SWAT team, police said. He was arrested and taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

Mullett was charged with domestic assault and battery, malicious damage over $250 (the police vehicle), discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and assault with intent to murder (by firing at officers).
