Feds penalize Massachusetts beer wholesaler over “pay-to-play” practice

Federal regulators have struck a record-high settlement from a Massachusetts beer distributor that illegally paid Boston bars to carry its brews, and said the case signals the start of a national crackdown on so-called “pay-to-play” in the beer industry.

The US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, or TTB, announced Wednesday that it has accepted a $750,000 offer from Everett-based distributor Craft Brewers Guild to end a previously undisclosed six-month federal investigation into the company’s payola scheme.
