Mayor Walsh: ‘Boston is a city of inclusion, a city of compassion’
‘The road ahead may seem uncertain. But our values are unwavering, and our work is before us,’ Walsh wrote in a new Medium post.
Mayor Marty Walsh admits the presidential election result hurts “more than usual,” but he’s urging Bostonians to get active and involved in the community in a new Medium post he published late Monday night.
“[Donald] Trump said things in his campaign that alienated and even threatened people I care about, including women, immigrants, gay, lesbian, and trans people, people of color, and Muslims,” Walsh wrote. “Those words angered me during the campaign, and they concern me greatly now that he has won.”
While city officials will work with the federal government on issues that will improve the lives of residents, Boston will not compromise its values as a city, he wrote, calling it “our sacred duty.”
He elaborated with this plea:
“We will defend our friends, neighbors, and family members from any and all efforts to exclude them, harm them, or strip them of their rights. Boston is a city of inclusion, a city of compassion, a welcoming, diverse, global city. We’ll stay that way.
The road ahead may seem uncertain. But our values are unwavering, and our work is before us. … the fact is, we all have things we can do. If you’re not sure what that is for you, reach out to my office, to other elected officials, or to community organizations. In civic engagement and local organizing, you can make a difference. If movements don’t exist for your issue or in your neighborhood, you can help create them. Now is the time to make positive change.”
Walsh’s post also lays out a number of initiatives that Boston will continue to focus on, such as creating affordable housing, ending chronic homelessness, supporting immigrants through the city’s Office for Immigrant Advancement, “doubl[ing]-down” on gender equality and pay equity, and continuing to “… forge a deeper understanding of how racial disparities impact life and increase inequality in America.”
Walsh, who endorsed Hillary Clinton in November 2015 and campaigned in New England and battleground states for the former secretary of state, said he stood with her vision for America during his speech at the Democratic National Convention.
