PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is pledging to protect those living in the country illegally from deportation under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

Elorza is scheduled to detail his plans Monday after making the commitment at a crowded rally on Saturday.

Providence has refused to hold for federal immigration officials people charged with civil infractions.

Elorza, whose parents emigrated from Guatemala, says he’d continue the policy even if Trump fulfills a campaign promise to pull money from cities that don’t cooperate with federal deportation measures.

The Democratic mayor says the city will host a community meeting on Wednesday to give people a chance to share their concerns and fears.

Estimates by the Pew Research Center found that in 2014 there were about 30,000 immigrants in Rhode Island illegally.
