Police clear Cambridge mall, arrest 6 after Jaylen Brown event becomes unruly

Police cleared the CambridgeSide Galleria Monday evening and arrested six juveniles after crowds attending a meet-and-greet event with Celtics rookie Jaylen Brown and rapper Desiigner became unruly, according to Cambridge police.

The juveniles, four males and two females, were arrested for disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and trespassing, police said in a statement.

Police estimated more than 1,000 people were at the East Cambridge mall when a large group of the event’s attendees surged forward, knocking over barriers and individuals waiting in line around 5:50 p.m. Cambridge police arrived to clear the “aggressive crowd” from the building, according to the statement. State, MIT, Harvard, Somerville, and Everett police were also present.

Brown had yet to arrive at the event being held at Champs Sports, he said in a tweet.

Officers were targeted with glass, bricks, and other objects while dispersing the crowd outside of the mall, police spokesman Jeremy Warnick said, adding that pepper spray was deployed as part of the crowd control. No injuries were sustained by the officers, he said. One attendee was sent to a local hospital, with others treated at the scene for exposure to the spray.

Brown retweeted a video from the scene:

Brown also tweeted a photo of himself down the street from the mall, adding that he’d try to reschedule the event soon:
