Evans participated in the 46th New York City Marathon on Sunday. The department congratulated its commissioner in a statement Monday, saying he completed his 51st career marathon in 3 hours and 46 minutes.
“Mile after mile, I saw officers standing guard along the route, I want to thank them for their service and for keeping me safe out there today,” Evans said in the statement. “My heart goes out to the NYPD, given all they’ve gone through in recent days.”
Evans finished his 50th marathon in May. After planning to make the 2016 Boston Marathon his 50th, he ultimately changed his mind after the March terrorist attacks in Brussels put added pressure on securing the race.
