Officials plan search at Roxbury building that ‘collapsed into itself’ during three-alarm fire
One person suffered serious burns and a home in Roxbury “collapsed into itself” during a three-alarm fire Saturday morning, authorities said.
The fire broke out at the two-story home just after 8:30 a.m., according to the Boston Fire Department. There was “heavy fire on arrival” and all floors were engulfed in flames. Firefighters said they used several ladder pipes, blitz guns, and hand lines while fighting the fire.
Fire officials said one adult was seriously burned and taken to a local hospital. While officials said they weren’t aware of any other injuries immediately after the fire, they need to search the debris to make sure others weren’t inside.
“It’s a building known for squatters so that’s obviously a concern,” said Steve MacDonald, spokesman for the Boston Fire Department. “We still have to do a search of the building.”
McDonald said that some fire is still burning under several layers of debris. Therefore, before officials can search for victims, a crane must be brought in to lift the pieces of the house away and allow space for firefighters to put out the remaining fire.
