Police: Lowell father to face charges after 3rd-grader brings gun to school
A father will face charges after his third-grade child brought a gun to Greenhalge Elementary School in Lowell on October 24, police said in a statement Thursday.On October 24, a third-grader allegedly took some type of firearm out of his backpack and showed it to several classmates after school. One student told his parent, who reported it to the school the morning of October 25, according to police. School officials then reported the incident to police.Police said they met with school personnel, the child, and his parents at Greenhalge Elementary School and discovered the firearm in question was at the home of the child, who thought the gun was an “Air Soft.”The investigation showed the gun was actually a .25 caliber pistol, which was found not to be loaded when the father turned it over to authorities, according to the statement. The father also handed over two live rounds in a magazine. Police said the firearm was in a box of property that belonged to a relative who was temporarily displaced by a fire.The father will face charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and improper storage of a firearm, according to police.The incident remains under investigation.
