Top Catholic, political officials in Mass. rally against legal pot
Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Governor Charlie Baker, and other religious and political leaders are rallying Tuesday against the ballot push to legalize marijuana.
The top Catholic and political leaders in Massachusetts will make the case against Question 4 at an event in Dorchester a week before voters decide whether to make pot legal.
The Boston Archdiocese recently directed $850,000 to the Campaign for a Safe and Healthy Massachusetts, which aims to defeat the ballot question.
O’Malley has argued that legalization would worsen the state’s scourge of opioid abuse, entice more children to use drugs, and hurt poor neighborhoods.
More than 100 religious leaders released a letter this week urging residents to vote no on the ballot initiative. They wrote that as clergy, they believe that “our efforts as a society should be focused toward improving life for our citizens. A culture that encourages and promotes the use of drugs is failing its people.”
