2 buildings near Government Center evacuated, streets closed after construction crew hits gas line

Two buildings were evacuated and several streets were closed near City Hall Monday morning after a construction crew struck a gas line.Firefighters responded to the leak at 10 Tremont St. around 8 a.m. and ordered the evacuation of the building, along with nearby 40 Court St., as a precaution, according to the Boston Fire Department.

Court, Somerset, and Sudbury streets were closed for several hours and reopened at about noon.

Fire officials said crews for National Grid are also on the scene working to shut off the line. Once the line is shut down, the department said firefighters and gas company workers will vent the adjoining buildings and check the indoor air quality and the roads should be reopened.

The department said the gas leaked into a few of the building’s basements, but has mostly been released into the atmosphere.
