Neighbors angry over Emerson plan to turn hostel into dorm

A plan to convert a Fenway hostel into temporary dorms for Emerson College has sparked fierce opposition from residents in a neighborhood already deeply mistrustful of academic institutions they feel have encroached on their tiny streets for decades.

Neighbors of 12 Hemenway, the four-story Boston Fenway Inn, said the city has excluded them from its vetting of plans for the dorm, and they worry a temporary dorm will become permanent, setting a bad precedent for how universities are allowed to scoop up off-campus housing.

“Who’s to say that my building is not next?” said Conrad Ciszek, who said he has lived around the corner on Edgerly Road for 25 years.
