Two workers killed in South End trench flood
Two people were killed Friday afternoon when workers apparently punctured a water main on a South End sidewalk, trapping the victims in a deep trench as it filled with a torrent of water from the broken pipe, officials said.
Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans confirmed the second fatality around 3:10 p.m.
“It looks like somehow a pipe must have broke and unfortunately they weren’t able to get themselves out of the hole,’’ said Evans, who added that it appeared other workers were able to escape from the trench.
