National Weather Service issues freeze warning for Saturday morning
The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a freeze warning for portions of Massachusetts early Saturday morning.
The warning encompasses cities and towns in Middlesex, Norfolk, Bristol, and Plymouth counties such as Cambridge, Framingham, Lowell, Lawrence, Foxborough, Norwood, Taunton, and Brockton.
Temperatures in those areas may drop into the upper 20s to lower 30s between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m., said meteorologist Frank Nocera.
“The normal overnight low for this time of year is like 45, so we’re talking about temperatures 10 to 15 degrees colder than normal,” Nocera said.
Nocera said a freeze warning is not unusual during October.
“We have large fluctuations this time of year,” said Nocera. “You’re in between seasons, so you get a taste of summer every now and then and a taste of winter.”
The weather service recommends bringing plants indoors on Friday, because the cold temperatures “could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.”
Temperatures on Saturday will then rise to the upper 50s to low 60s, said Nocera. The normal high this time of year is 63, he said.
Sunday and next week will bring above-normal temperatures between 65 and 70, he said.
“So this is just a really quick blast of cool air,” Nocera said.
