Firefighters battled blaze at Hampton Beach restaurant
Firefighters battled a 3-alarm blaze Wednesday morning in a 115-year-old building at New Hampshire’s Hampton Beach.
Hampton Fire Chief Jameson Ayotte spotted smoke coming out of the Purple Urchin restaurant inside the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom complex as he drove to work just before 8 a.m., the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.
“This is an old structure (with) very seasoned wood,” Ayotte told the newspaper. “I knew that we did have sprinkler protection in this building. I also know that it’s vacant at this time of year for the most part. There were no occupants this morning, which is a saving grace. Most of the business owners have left for the season.”
The damage was confined to the Purple Urchin and a storage area for the ballroom, although surrounding businesses probably suffered smoke and water damage, Ayotte told the Union Leader.
The building, a popular summer spot, was built in 1901. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
