Bicyclist killed in crash with 18-wheeler in Porter Square identified
A man on a bicycle who was killed Wednesday morning in a crash with an 18-wheeler in Cambridge’s Porter Square has been identified by authorities.
Bernard Lavins, 60, of Lexington, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office. Cambridge police spokesman Jeremy Warnick said the crash, which occurred on Massachusetts Avenue, opposite the Porter Square shopping area, was reported at 8:08 a.m.
A “small number” of Cambridge Public School students witnessed the crash and grief counselors were placed at the schools students were traveling to when the crash occurred, according to a statement from the district.
The truck’s driver stayed at the scene, and the collision remains under investigation, the DA’s office said.
