Gloucester police find remnants of apparent pipe bomb
Gloucester police found the remnants of what appeared to be a pipe bomb in a field Thursday morning, police said in a statement.Around 10:55 a.m., the Massachusetts Environmental Police came across what looked like an explosive device made from PVC piping while completing work in a field on Farrington Avenue.Police said the device was one inch in diameter and about six inches long, with a burn mark down one side indicating a fuse or wick burn. The pipe seemed to be filled with a cement-like substance on one end, while the other end was hollow. After arriving on scene, the state police bomb squad discovered the device had already been detonated and there was no threat to the public, police said. The incident remains under investigation.
