Drive aims to register Massachusetts voters before Oct. 19 deadline
If the first presidential debate inspired you to vote, but you are not yet registered, you have less than a month to do so.
The group MassVOTE would love to help you out and has organized a registration drive for Tuesday, National Voter Registration Day. The non-profit group, which works to register, educate, and mobilize voters, is hosting a voter registration event at Prince Hall in Dorchester from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
In 2008, 6 million Americans didn’t vote because they either didn’t know how or missed a registration deadline, according to nationalvoterregistrationday.org. The group is hoping registration drives will help the problem by educating more eligible voters before the Oct. 19 registration deadline. The presidential election will take place Nov. 8.
MassVOTE is also supporting registration drives Tuesday at the South End Community Health Center, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation in Dorchester, Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts and Whittier Street Health Center in Roxbury, Madison Park Development Corporation in Boston, the YWCA of Greater Lawrence, Boston’s Pine Street Inn, and the Joint Committee for Children’s Health Care in Everett.
The group has also reached out to our nation’s youngest voters by visiting local high schools such as English High in Jamaica Plain and Madison Park Technical Vocational High in Roxbury, where students were invited to pre-register during their lunch break.
Bay State residents can cast their vote for America’s next president beginning Oct. 24, when early voting in Massachusetts begins.
