Experienced diver dies off East Point in Nahant

Authorities say a diver died Saturday afternoon off the coast of East Point in Nahant after running out of air and being thrown against rocks by the current.

The Essex District Attorney’s office identified the diver as Vinicius O. Vianna, 38, of Danvers. Vianna was an experienced diver and was certified as a rescue diver, according to the statement.

Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, the Nahant Police Department received a report from a woman stating she was off the coast of East Point with two scuba divers in the water, one of whom was unresponsive, according to the statement.

The Nahant Harbormaster boat responded to the scene and pulled both divers on board. The divers were then taken to Salem Hospital, where Vianna was pronounced dead.
