Police: Agitated knife-wielding man talked down in Hyde Park

A distraught man wielding a knife was talked down by officers Wednesday in Hyde Park and taken to a hospital, Boston police said in a statement Thursday.Around 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to the area of 875 Canterbury St. for a report of a person with a knife making threats.Police said they were unable to locate the subject but gave a detailed description of a man in his 20s wearing all black with a gray and black bandana pulled up over his face to other responding units.An officer later reported he had spotted a person matching the description enter the Stop & Shop where he was working a paid detail, at 950 American Legion Highway, according to police.The detail officer noticed the man had a knife in his hand and seemed to be agitated, police said. He approached the man and started talking with him in an effort to deescalate the situation while he directed other civilians out of harm’s way, according to police.The man allegedly screamed, “Just shoot me… Go ahead, just shoot me…” several times, to which the officer responded “We aren’t going to shoot you, we just want to get you some help,” according to police.The man allegedly threatened to hurt himself and others, raising the knife several times up to his neck and pointing it at his stomach, police said. The officer continued to talk the man down from his distraught state until he agreed to drop the knife and turn himself over to emergency medical personnel.He was then taken to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation, police said.
