Sen. Elizabeth Warren will rally with janitors on Boston Common
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren will rally with thousands of janitors on Boston Common Saturday afternoon.
The janitors are currently in negotiations over a contract with the Maintenance Contractors of New England that expires Sept. 30, according to the State House News Service. The contract, which covers about 13,000 janitors, is considered “one of the largest master contracts in New England,” according to union 32BJ SEIU. It is a mostly immigrant workforce and includes custodians at the State House and those who work with C&W Services, a spokesperson for the union said.
The union opposes a change in the MBTA’s cleaning contract with two janitorial companies that would slash minimum staffing requirements, saving the T about $8 million over a period of two years.
“The hardworking men and women who clean, maintain and protect more than 2,000 buildings throughout Greater Boston deserve a fighting chance to build a future for themselves and for their families — and that means ensuring they get fair pay and good benefits,” Warren said in a statement sent out by the union. “I’m proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the workers of 32BJ SEIU.”
The rally will take place at 1 p.m. at Boston Common’s Parkman Bandstand.
