Zakim Bridge will glow purple for overdose awareness day
The Zakim Bridge will be bathed in purple light Wednesday evening to honor International Overdose Awareness Day, according to the state Department of Transportation.

A recently released report from the state Department of Health revealed an estimated 984 people fatally overdosed in Massachusetts during the first half of this year, compared to the 784 overdose deaths in the first half of 2015. The report also found more people in the state are dying from the synthetic painkiller fentanyl.
In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, Mayor Marty Walsh urged people on Twitter to learn how to prevent an overdose.
