Crash on Route 1A in East Boston leaves 2 dead
Four people were also sent to the hospital.
An early morning crash on Route 1A in East Boston has left two people dead and four others hospitalized, according to state police.
The crash happened about 1:15 a.m. on 1A northbound, a half-mile after the exit from the Ted Williams Tunnel.
According to state police, a Subaru Legacy that had just exited the tunnel struck the rear of a Hampton Inn airport shuttle bus. The impact caused the shuttle to strike jersey barriers on both sides of the roadway.
Two occupants of the shuttle — a 59-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, both from El Paso, Texas — were ejected from the vehicle. Both died at the scene, police said.
The man and woman were identified by state police as Joseph Rodriguez and Sandra Arreola, respectively.
Three others from the shuttle were hospitalized, state police said. A 57-year-old woman from El Paso was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. A 45-year-old man from Tampa, Florida was hospitalized but released. The driver of the shuttle bus, a 53-year-old man from East Boston, is at Tufts Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Subaru Legacy, a 27-year-old Swampscott man, was also hospitalized, police said. His injuries are also not believed to be life threatening.
The shuttle is equipped with seatbelts, police said, and an investigation is underway to determine whether the victims were wearing them.
The investigation will also determine whether criminal charges will be sought, police said.
Route 1A northbound in the area of the crash was closed to traffic for part of the morning commute.
