The MBTA has expanded its Student Pass program to help thousands more kids get to work and school. The new program begins September 1.

The MBTA offers two types of student fares — a Student CharlieCard and the Student Pass. With a Student CharlieCard, students pay half price per trip on all modes of transportation. The Student Pass offers unlimited rides for a monthly fee of $30. Previously the Student Pass was only distributed through participating schools and was not offered during the summer.

Beginning September 1, all students with a Student CharlieCard can access the unlimited ride Student Pass. The pass will be good throughout the summer. And the program will include middle and high school students.

“Having a strong Student Pass program can make a huge difference in the lives of young people who rely heavily on public transportation to get to school or extracurricular activities or jobs,” MBTA General Manager Brian Shortsleeve said.

During the 2015 – 2016 school year, about 50,000 students received or bought a Student Pass from their schools and another 30,000 students received the Student CharlieCard.

The Student Pass will now be available year round at all MBTA fare vending machines and retail sales terminals for all students with a Student CharlieCard.
