Bicyclist struck, killed by commuter rail train in Somerville

A bicyclist is dead after being struck by a commuter rail train in Somerville Sunday afternoon, MBTA Transit Police said.
The bicyclist, a man believed to be in his late 20s, was crossing the tracks at Park Street in Somerville at around 1:30 p.m. when he was hit by an outbound Fitchburg line train, according to a statement from police.
Police, along with the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, are investigating the death.
Police said the gates were in the down position when the biker entered the tracks.
The incident caused severe delays and led the MBTA to shut down service on the Fitchburg line between between Porter Square and North Station. The next inbound train is expected to leave Fitchburg at 6:18 p.m.

Police blocked off the rail’s intersection at Park Street in Somerville, and police and residents gathered nearby.
