A small, private plane made an emergency landing on a sandbar in the Quabbin Reservoir Tuesday afternoon, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The plane’s pilot, a 42-year-old man from Newport, Rhode Island, reported a mechanical problem before landing in the northern part of the reservoir in New Salem near Mount L., police said. The single-engine plane did not crash, and was intact, standing upright on its wheels, according to police.

The pilot was not injured in the landing, police said.

Police responded to rescue the pilot just before 3 p.m. Officials are working on plans to remove the plan from the sandbar.
