A tornado touched down in Concord early this morning

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado struck Concord early this morning, damaging 39 homes.

An EF-1 tornado touched down just after 3 a.m. It covered a 400-yard wide, half-mile-long path and packed 100 mph winds. There were no injuries or deaths, officials said during a Monday morning press conference.

“From my experience, I was surprised not to see more trees into houses,” said Alan Dunham, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “A couple of trees were just twisted and then came down.”

“We have 39 houses that were damaged in some way,” said Concord Fire Chief Mark Cotreau. “But, miraculously, just one house with significant structural damage.”

The weather service spent the morning investigating the damage to determine if the storm was a tornado. The reason he knew it was a tornado was because the damaged trees were going in opposite directions, said Dunham. The tornado was confined to Concord, though high winds caused tree damage in other towns, he said.

Crews are working to remove downed trees and repair wires, officials said. Some residents in the affected areas may be without power for more than a day, said Christopher Whelan, the town manager.

Before today, the last confirmed tornado in Massachusetts was on June 23, 2015 in Westminster, according to the weather service.
