Man charged with OUI after crashing into police cruiser in Littleton

A 31-year-old Ayer man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly crashed head-on into a police cruiser in Littleton while driving under the influence of drugs.

Littleton police said Timothy Walsh was charged with his third offense of operating under the influence, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and marked lanes violation.

An officer responded to the area of Ayer Road around 10 p.m. for a report of an erratic driver, according to police. The officer saw a car parked on the shoulder of the road facing the wrong direction as he approached the scene. Police said as the vehicle, driven by Walsh, re-entered the roadway, it struck the police cruiser.

It was later determined that Walsh was under the influence of drugs and he was arrested, according to police.

Both Walsh and the officer involved in the crash were transported to an area hospital for evaluation and released.

“While thankfully neither the officer or operator were injured in this crash, this incident shows that officers never know what will happen while they are on patrol,” Littleton Police Chief Matthew King said in a statement. “This officer’s immediate actions and concern for the other operator demonstrates the high quality of policing within our department.”

Walsh is expected to be arraigned in Ayer District Court Friday.
