Nauset Beach closed to swimmers after shark sightings
Officials closed a Cape Cod beach to swimmers Thursday after around half a dozen great white sharks were spotted in the area.
Lifeguards closed Nauset Beach around noon after the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy alerted them to a high number of sharks swimming close to the shore, Alexis Mathison, the beach’s assistant director, told Boston.com.
“This is normal for this time of year,” Mathison said.
Mathison said the conservancy tagged about five sharks Thursday, and said more sharks that had previously been tagged were swimming nearby. But the conservancy says they did not tag any sharks on Thursday.
Nauset Beach, which stretches about 10 miles between Orleans and Chatham, is expected to reopen to swimmers Friday.
