Coast Guard rescues 4 fishermen off Maine coast

The Coast Guard rescued four fishermen off the coast of Maine Wednesday morning after their boat began taking on water.

The Coast Guard said it received a broken transmission from the crew aboard the Lydia & Maya around midnight and shortly later they received an alert that the fishermen from the 71-foot boat were in the water.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Cape Cod located the fishermen around 2 a.m., 40 miles south of Southwest Harbor, Maine, using the crew’s distress signal. A rescue swimmer helped airlift the four people into the helicopter, according to the Coast Guard.

The rescued crew were suffering from mild hypothermia and were transported medical treatment.

“The weather conditions were not ideal for searching,” Chief Petty Officer Aaron Clendaniel, the command duty officer in Sector Northern New England’s command center, said in a statement. “The Lydia & Maya crew did a great job making sure their safety supplies were in good working condition, and that is what allowed us to find them so quickly.”
