Abandoned boat crashes into Oak Bluffs dock, rocks

This boat crashed onto the Oak's Bluff shore shortly after 3 a.m. Monday. Oak Bluffs Police Department

Around 3 a.m. Monday, a boat was spotted drifting through the waters off of Tisbury — with no one in it. Five minutes later, the abandoned 26-foot vessel crashed onto the shore, resting on top of several rocks and leaning against a dock, Oak Bluffs police said.

Investigators determined that two people had been steering the boat in the outer harbor of Vineyard Haven until they crashed into an anchored boat, police said in a statement. The two people were forced overboard, but the boat continued to travel. Its final resting place was on the beach near Temahigan Avenue in Oak Bluffs.

The two people were able to get onto another boat after abandoning their own, according to police, and one of them was later arrested by Tisbury police.

The Coast Guard found the boaters and brought them back to shore.
