Stem cell scientist appointed new dean of Harvard Medical School

Harvard Medical School announced Tuesday that Dr. George Q. Daley, a prominent stem cell researcher and alum of the university, will become the school’s new dean, STAT reports.

Daley has a medical degree from Harvard and a PhD in biology from MIT, and the 55-year-old has spent his entire career in Boston and Cambridge, according to STAT. He currently is a professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Harvard Medical School and runs the stem cell transportation program at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Daley will take over the position beginning January 1.

The school’s former dean, Dr. Jeffrey Flier, stepped down from the position July 31.
