Driver killed in head-on Mass Pike crash was driving in wrong direction, police say

A man driving in the wrong direction on the Massachusetts Turnpike late Monday night died in a head-on crash, state police said in a statement.The crash happened just before midnight on the Mass. Pike in Southborough. State police originally reported the location of the crash as Westborough. 

State police said a 28-year-old Rutland man was driving westbound in a 2007 Ford Focus when he pulled into the breakdown lane, made a U-turn, and began traveling eastbound on the westbound side of the highway.

His vehicle struck the side of a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox before hitting  a 2007 Dodge Charger and a 2010 GMC Terrain head-on, police said. The 28-year-old, whose identity has not yet been released, suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the statement.

Police said the operator of the Equinox, a 37-year-old man from Bridgeport, Connecticut, and a juvenile passenger were not hurt, while another adult female passenger was taken to UMass Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

A 31-year-old Auburn man driving the Charger was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to police. A Bridgeport man, operating the Terrain, and his three passengers were transported to UMass Medical Center as well. There was no information provided on their conditions.
