4-alarm fire displaces 5 people in South Boston
A four-alarm fire spread rapidly through a vacant South Boston brownstone on Monday night, displacing five people from a neighboring building and causing an estimated $1 million in damages, according to fire officials.

Boston fire responded to the scene at 797 East 4th Street at 10:25 p.m., where firefighters quickly ordered a second and third alarm for the blaze. Fire officials said the three-story brownstone was being renovated.

The five people who were displaced from the neighboring building will stay with family and friends, according to the fire department.
There were no injuries. Investigators determined the fire was caused by oily rags used in floor finishing, according to the fire department. Officials said the rags were being stored in trash bags in the vacant building next door to brownstone that was being renovated.
