Infant found unresponsive at Lynn shelter died of natural causes

State child welfare officials have determined a 4-month-old boy who was found unresponsive in a Lynn homeless shelter last year died of natural causes, The Boston Globe reports.

The state Department of Children and Families told the Globe the conclusion is based on findings by the state medical examiner and the agency’s investigation into the death of Charles D. Brand III.

The infant was pronounced dead at Mass. General Hospital less than 24 hours after his mother found him not breathing at the Independence House. His death was being investigated as a possible child endangerment case.

The state medical examiner found the child died of “complications of acute bronchopneumonia,” which causes widespread coagulation and clotting problems in the bloodstream, according to the Globe.
