Police said the officer approached Travis Artist, 36, after he attempted to go through the fare gates without paying, and issued him a citation for fare evasion. Artist was removed from the station after creating a disturbance when he received the citation, according to police.

Artist then  re-entered the station 10 minutes later, according to police. As the transit officer was escorting him from the station, he became, “verbally aggressive and refused to comply with the officers commands,” police said.

Artist allegedly struck the officer in the face during the ensuing struggle and the officer was stuck in his arm by an uncapped needle.

Artist was arrested and has been charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and trespassing, according to police. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Cambridge District Court.

Police said the officer, who sustained lacerations to the mouth, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
