Police find hatchet, knives, lighter fluid in suspect’s vehicle after lengthy pursuit
A New Bedford man found to be carrying a hatchet, knives, and lighter fluid was apprehended Monday afternoon after a lengthy pursuit, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Police said 50-year-old Randall Harrison was seen striking his Chevrolet Blazer with a hatchet in Rochester just after 1 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, Harrison allegedly entered his SUV and fled, leading police to pursue him for around 20 miles while trying several times to deflate his tires. Harrison drove at speeds of more than 60 mph during the pursuit, refusing to stop until troopers boxed him in, trapping him in downtown New Bedford, according to police.
During the chase, Harrison waved both a hatchet and a knife out the window and doused himself in butane fuel, police said. A search of his vehicle recovered both weapons, the fluid, and a lighter, according to police.
Harrison was evaluated at St. Luke’s Hospital. State police planned to arrest him upon his release. He remained in the hospital for continued evaluation later Monday night.
