Man drowns in Merrimack River after jumping off Haverhill bridge

One person drowned and two others were rescued Wednesday evening after jumping into the Merrimack River from a Haverhill bridge, according to authorities.

The incident began when 47-year-old Trent Cook, of Haverhill, “got into trouble” after jumping into the river off the Basiliere Bridge, according to the Essex District Attorney’s office and Haverhill Fire Chief William Laliberty. The DA’s office said a woman, a friend of Cook’s, and a man fishing nearby both jumped in to try and save him.

Firefighters arrived on the scene around 7:30 p.m. after it was reported there were three people in the water in need of assistance. They were able to pull all three people from the water, but Cook was critically injured and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The man and woman were taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to the DA’s office.

Laliberty said Cook may have been jumping into the water for fun, though he said the bridge isn’t usually a place where the department sees people swimming. The DA’s office said no foul play is suspected.
