Bicyclist seriously injured in Townsend crash with SUV

A bicyclist who was struck by an SUV Sunday in Townsend was airlifted in critical condition, police said.

Emergency personnel responded to the crash at around 1:28 p.m. on Route 119 near Eastman Street, according to Townsend police.

The bicyclist, a 55-year-old Fitchburg man whose name has not been released, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, before being airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center, police said.

A 42-year-old woman from Bedford, New Hampshire, was behind the wheel of the Mazda CX-9.

Townsend and state police are investigating the crash.
