Kevin Butler, 26, of Hull.
A Hull man was arrested Tuesday after police found an explosive device during an investigation of a break-in reported at his home, according to Hull police.
Kevin Butler, 26, reported an alleged break-in at his Nantasket Avenue home around noon, police said. He told responding officers that a safe containing a quantity of cash and his vehicle had been stolen.
During the investigation, with Butler present, officers said they found an approximately five-inch cylinder packed with what appeared to be an explosive powder in the home. Butler’s vehicle was discovered unoccupied a short distance away from his residence on Beach Avenue.
The Hull Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad responded to the home and rendered the device to be safe.
Butler was charged with possession of an explosive/destructive device, possession of anabolic steroids, and disturbing the peace, according to police. He was released on bail pending his arraignment in Hingham District Court on Wednesday.
Police said the alleged break-in and theft at Butler’s home is also being investigated, and that no arrests had been made as of Tuesday evening.
