6-year-old declared ‘Police Chief for a Day’ orders free ice cream for Boston Children’s Hospital

Boston Police Department

When 6-year-old Owen Nichols was declared “Police Chief for a Day” Tuesday, he had an important order for his officers.

“Free ice cream for Boston Children’s Hospital,” Nichols, a patient at the hospital himself, said.

Following orders, officers from the District B-2 (Roxbury) Community Service Office and Sergeant Samil Silta then treated the entire hospital to an ice cream from a J.P. Licks ice cream truck, according to Boston police.

Nichols has spent the past 10 weeks at the hospital undergoing 18 surgeries to correct a birth defect, police said. Knowing the boy loves police, Silta presented Owen with a Boston Police T-shirt and badge that promoted him to “Chief for the Day.”

Police said Silta also delivered Nichols a package from the Polk County Sheriff’s Department in Florida that included T-shirts, a Polk County Sheriff badge, coloring books, a backpack, crayons, and markers.

“Owen was a great Police Chief and gave a special thanks to all the staff of Children’s Hospital and the Polk County Sheriffs as he ate his ice cream from the front seat of his police car,” police said.
