Fisherman injured by dogfish off Gloucester

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a fisherman Tuesday morning after he was injured by a dogfish’s dorsal fin off the coast of Gloucester, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Roger Brisson, 69, captain of the 26-foot-long fishing boat Miss Molly, placed a distress radio call to the Coast Guard Sector Boston’s command center around 10 a.m. saying he had been wounded while fishing alone. His injuries were non-life-threatening, the Coast Guard said.

Brisson caught the dogfish, a type of shark, 16 miles east of Cape Ann. When he tried to remove the shark from the hook, it punctured his arm with its dorsal fin.

“My arm is swelled up a little bit, I know it’s going to get worse,” he stated during the call.

A rescue crew from Station Gloucester and two Gloucester Fire Department emergency medical services personnel arrived to Brisson’s location around 10:45 a.m., officials said. He was taken aboard the rescue boat, where he received medical treatment.

Back on land at Station Gloucester, an ambulance transported him to Addison Gilbert Hospital to treat lacerations on his arm. He was released mid-afternoon, officials said.
