Officials in Plymouth warned that unexploded fireworks would wash up on nearby shores after a barge full of fireworks caught fire during Monday night’s Fourth of July celebration.

The fire on the barge created a dramatic and brightly colored early ending to the firework show. A second barge nearby also had a “malfunction,” state fire officials said. No one was injured.

State fire officials are investigating the mishap and will supervise the dismantling of the unexploded fireworks on the two barges, the Department of Fire Services said in a statement.

In the meantime, the town of Plymouth issued an urgent public safety message advising residents to stay away from Long Beach, as well as Nelson’s Park, Stephen’s Field, and other locations along the shore as officials work to remove the fireworks.

The Plymouth Fire and Police departments told residents not to touch the washed up fireworks, which could be dangerous if they were to explode. The town told residents to call the police or fire department if undetonated fireworks are spotted.

Separately, a fireworks barge in Salisbury also caught fire due to trash left on the barge, fire officials said.

“These incidents underscore just how unpredictable fireworks are even for trained professionals,” State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey said.

Photos and videos from the Plymouth event show a burst of color low on the horizon as the barge caught flames.
