Nantucket cracking down on July Fourth beach party

Nantucket’s July Fourth fireworks show have been moved back a day as part of an effort by island officials to crack down on raucous beach celebrations on the holiday, The Boston Globe reports.

Island officials told the Globe around 70 police officers would be on hand to keep the annual rowdy bash on Nobadeer Beach under control. Last year, the stretch of sand on the island’s south shore was overrun by a crowd of 8,000 people.

This year won’t be as fun for the college students and young people that usually flock to the party, officials said, with police checkpoints being set up and strict enforcement of public drinking and trespassing laws.

“We’re discouraging kids from coming down,” Nantucket Chief of Police William Pittman told the Globe. “It was out of control last year . . . This year, if they come, it might not be as much fun as in the past.”
