Girl, grandmother struck by car following domestic dispute between 2 drivers

A 5-year-old girl and her 54-year-old grandmother were critically injured after a driver crashed into the pair as they walked on a Worcester Street on Wednesday. Police said the crash was a result of domestic dispute between the driver and her ex-boyfriend in another car.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old woman, was observed by witnesses following a man driving a pickup truck on Foster Street. As the the vehicles turned onto Major Taylor Road, police said the woman swerved to the right hitting the back of the pickup before striking the girl and grandmother on the sidewalk outside St. Vincent Hospital. The vehicle then went through a fence before coming to a final stop.

The grandmother, a Worcester resident, and her granddaughter, of Shrewsbury, suffered multiple injuries, according to police. Police said Thursday the girl was in good condition, but that her grandmother remained critical, but stable, with “numerous” broken bones.

Before the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m., police said a man reported to officers he was having a domestic problem with his ex-girlfriend. According to police, the man said he was driving his pickup towards the police station to speak with an officer and that his ex-girlfriend was following him, trying to hit his car.

The driver, who has not been identified by police, was arrested at the hospital, where she was receiving treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. She will be arraigned Thursday on charges of domestic assault and battery, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a child under the age of 14, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and malicious destruction of property.
