Will the Citgo sign become an official landmark?
The Boston Landmarks Commission will consider a proposal to grant official landmark status to the Citgo sign above Kenmore Square, reports The Boston Globe.

An online petition supporting the effort received nearly 1,100 signatures in its first four days.
Boston University is selling 660 Beacon St., the building beneath the sign, and several other buildings in Kenmore Square. Preservationists worry that whoever purchases the buildings could alter the sign’s place on the city skyline or remove it altogether.
“It has become as iconic of Boston as Old North Church and the Swan Boats,” Greg Galer, executive director of the Boston Preservation Alliance, which launched the signature drive, told the Globe. “We’re trying to demonstrate that there’s broad public support for keeping it.”
If it’s declared a landmark, any proposal that involves changes to the sign would require a review by the Boston Landmarks Commission.
