Police: Dogs ‘left baking in cars’ in Wrentham
Police responded to the Wrentham Mall twice over the weekend to rescue dogs locked in hot cars in the parking lot.
Wrentham police said Sunday they were alerted to the two separate incidents during the day by passersby and each time broke into the cars to remove the dogs and give them water. Wrentham Deputy Chief Bill McGrath said he and another officer used the same tool kit typically used when a person is locked out of their car to reach the dogs in distress.
“We figure if we can save keys, we can save dogs,” he said.
McGrath said police were breaking into a car to rescue one dog when a woman approached them saying there was another pooch locked in a different car further down the same row of parked vehicles.
Animal Control responded to both incidents and issued citations.
The interior temperatures of the cars were 98 and 135 degrees when the dogs were rescued, police said.
“As is always the case, the owners eventually showed up and seemed surprised to learn how fast a car turns into an oven,” police said. “A lesson learned, unfortunately at the expense of their pets.”
