Report finds climate change could have worse impact on Boston than previously expected

A new report has found the effects of climate change on Boston are expected to be far worse than previously anticipated in other studies, according to The Boston Globe.

The report, commissioned by the city, took into account new research suggesting cities along the East Coast will be particularly impacted by the melting of Antarctic ice sheets. In the worst-case scenario, the report found sea levels could rise almost twice what was previously predicted, putting about 30 percent of Boston under water.

“Boston is a bull’s-eye for more sea level damage,” Rob DeConto, a climate scientist at UMass Amherst and co-author the new report, told the Globe. “We have a lot to fear from Antarctica.”

Mayor Marty Walsh told the Globe the report is part of the city’s effort to assess vulnerability related to climate change and find solutions.

“The updated climate projections confirm that we must work together to take bold approaches to prepare Boston for the impacts of climate change,” he said in a statement.
