Distracted driving led to a construction sign piercing a windshield, police say

crash with construction sign Massachusetts State Police

An 18-year-old Rhode Island man was driving on I-495 in Wrentham Tuesday when he struck a highway sign, which then pierced his windshield, according to state police.

Police said an initial investigation into the incident, which occurred around 7:45 p.m., found the driver of the Toyota Corolla wasn’t paying attention to traffic stopped ahead of him due to a construction project lane closure. When the man from Tiverton, Rhode Island, tried to stop, he lost control and veered off the road, striking a construction sign warning about the lane closure, according to police.

The impact caused the sign to strike down through the car’s windshield, hitting the man in the head, police said. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with a head laceration.

In a statement, police reminded drivers to pay attention when behind the wheel:

The moral of the story? Drive at reasonable speeds, pay attention to the traffic in front of you, and slow down when approaching construction zones. Your only responsibility as a driver is to pay attention to operation of your vehicle and be aware of the traffic around you. Do not let yourself become distracted from that responsibility.
