Boy, adult hospitalized after being struck by car near BU
A 10-year-old boy and a 78-year-old adult walking on the sidewalk near Boston University were struck by a car that jumped the curb following a fender bender Tuesday night.
The crash occurred around 9:21 p.m. near 640 Commonwealth Avenue when a woman driving a Mercedes struck a Toyota Camry stopped in front of her, according to Boston police. The woman told officers she was looking at her cell phone when she saw the car in front of her and was unable to stop.
Police said the man driving the Toyota was stopped in the bike lane waiting to pick up an Uber passenger when his car was hit. The driver of the Mercedes then lost control and swerved through a barrier meant to prevent cars from pulling up to the curb onto the sidewalk, striking the two pedestrians, according to police.
The child’s father told police his son was stuck under the car after it stopped and had to be pulled from underneath the vehicle.
Both victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.
The woman driving the Mercedes was cited for distracted driving, and the Uber driver was issued a citation for unsafe stopping.
