The Coast Guard rescued a couple early Tuesday morning after they were stranded at sea for 12 hours.

Joseph Earner, 55, and his wife Kathleen, 52, set off in a green and yellow raft Monday afternoon in the area of Rocky Beach in Cohasset. Their son, who knew they were rafting, reported them missing to the Coast Guard at 1 a.m. They were last heard from at about 4:30 p.m.

The Coast Guard searched for three hours, using a 29-foot response boat from Hull and an air crew from Cape Cod. The couple was found at 4 a.m. about eight nautical miles northwest of Rocky Beach, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard says the couple was not injured.

“We are happy to bring this couple home alive and well, but urge mariners to remember to have the proper safety gear when on the water,” said Lt. Jennifer Hertzler. “Wearing life jackets and having a radio are just some basic examples of what mariners need to have on the water to be safe.”
